I don’t know a lot about anime and manga, but I love japanese films like spirited away and all the other studio ghibli films (Porco Rosso is my favourite..)

I only know a little bit about Manga – having seen a couple of films. They have immense appeal since they are so graphic and inventive but I find them a bit too violent for my taste (which is odd, since I do like many violent live-action films).

I have the DVD for Akira which I believe is a Manga classic: it’s got some fantastic scenes but as a whole I wasn’t fully engaged.

Is Animé a gentler form? I came across Pokemon when my kids got into it but it had no appeal for me, I’m afraid (too old). And I didn’t like shows such as Yu-gi-oh! since they seemed to be made with the sole intention of selling high-priced card games to kids. My children disagree with me on this (as on so many other subjects…)

What are your favourites? Maybe you can advise me…

I love Japan and loads of Japanese things (like sushi!) but I have never got into Manga. I really loved Spirited Away, i’ve got it on DVD.

No – I admit I have not really looked into this much. Whenever I see the images (e.g., on children’s TV) they seem really weird and I have a hard time identifying with the characters or understanding the plots etc. I think they lose something in the translation, but admittedly I have spent about 20 minutes thinking about this in my entire life, perhaps there are better examples than the ones that have crossed my path.

I don’t know a lot about manga, but I’m a big fan of japanese animated films from studio Ghibli. ‘The Girl Who Leapt Through Time’ has some really nice time travel physics in it!
