• Question: do you prefer physics, chemistry or biology? why?

      Hey Hannah, personally I prefer physics, because it is the most fundamental. There would be no chemistry without electrons moving around and it all comes back to physics. Everything depends on physics. All we see around us are made from the fundamental particles that physics tries to explain. I love it I do.

      I’m sorry if this seems like cheating, Hannah, but I really like it when they all come together. For example, I use MRI which exploits physics to measure chemical properties of the brain (a complex biological system). Newer sciences like Psychology, Neuroscience and Biology (my real favourites) depend on the older, more established sciences like Physics and Chemistry.

      It has to be physics 😉 Physics is the fundamental science that underpins all the others – but I would say that wouldn’t I?

      Gosh that is a tough one Hannah.

      Physics was my first love (that’s what I did for my degree). And they say that you never forget your first love, don’t they?

      But I did in a way because at the end of my degree I started to get very interested in biology and biochemistry and that is the area that I work in now. But I am still doing some physics because, even though I study protein molecules, I am using X-ray crystallography (a method that uses physics and maths) to work out their structures.

      I really can’t decide! I do know that I like chemistry the least but that is because I find it hardest to understand. But I wish I had the time now to learn more about it.
