• Question: How many female scientists are there in your field?

      Hi Francisca, great question. I’m afraid that I don’t know exact numbers. However I will tell you that there are certainly more men than women, but there are plenty of women involved. You certainly are not the only girl and don’t stick out at all. So although it is male dominated it isn’t that much of a big deal. I have never ever seen a disadvantage to being a girl in this field. There are not many women when you get to the top level – professor. This is true of women at the top level across all professions. It seems like at the moment women don’t *generally* get to the very top level as it seems that they put family first. Hopefully this is changing and I think the problem stems from the long hours necessary to have a job at the top level.
