• Question: what age group do you hate talking about you subjuect to

      I don’t hate any, but its sometimes hard to pitch it right – so if I talk to primary kids then you really have to go back to basics. If you talk to year 7s they are still impressed by enthusiasm, and year 9’s-well they are much cooler. So its always a little tough, but usually good fun!

      I like talking to all age groups, and when they’re difficult to get through to I suspect it is because I am having a bad day, rather than their problem. I can’t think of any particular age group that is hard to reach – but undergraduates (20s) can be a pretty tough audience, even though they are generally interested in what you are trying to say. I think this might be because of the way I sometimes try to teach them – by standing there talking for hours on end; no one enjoys that! When I can I try to get people to do things for themselves and talk back, because that seems to get the brain going and everyone has fun. However, you can never be quite sure where you’ll end up, so it makes it hard to choose exam questions (at Uni, the teachers set all the exams).

      Because I work at a museum I have become really used to talking to young children! so i’m really comfortable with small kids now and more nervous around teenagers like you guys!

      I find talking to foetuses quite frustrating as they never ask questions.

      But I enjoy talking about science to all other age groups!

      I’ll talk to anyone who’ll listen about science. I don’t worry too much about the ages of my audience just so long as they will talk back to me and ask questions. Y9’s can be tricky sometimes as they don’t always want to talk but we normally manage to work something out.
