Question: if god made the world in 7 days and people on the 6th day how could dinasours exist millions of years before? unless the seven days represent 7 billion years?
Hey Isabella, I just think you can’t take it too literally. You’re right, the solar system was only formed around 5 billion years ago (in a universe that is nearly 14 billion years old) and the dinosaurs (quick google check) 230 million years ago…
Good question. I don’t think you can believe both. I believe the dinosaurs were around millions of years ago because I seen fossil dinosaurs dug out of rocks that are that are that old.
My dad is a lay preacher in the Church of England (it’s kind of like being an understudy to the vicar, I think). He says (I am paraphrasing) there can be two kinds of truth, you can believe something’s literally true, but something could also be figuratively true (like a poem – “the daffodil is made of the purest gold”). I don’t really agree with this. At least, I think if you believe something is only figuratively true you should say so very clearly, so that other people don’t misunderstand.
That’s what I think. But (like any theory) it could be wrong. I am not telling you what to think.
That is really a question about religion and science, on which people take different views sometimes.
Personally I don’t read the Bible or the creation story in genesis as history or science. Neither the figure of 7 days or 7 billion years is in agreement with our modern understanding of the universe. As far as we can tell (and this is still a bit uncertain) the earth is about 4 billion years old. Life emerged about 3 billion years ago and the dinosaurs a long time after that. Humans came even later.
Humans and dinosaurs never co-existed on the earth since the dinosaurs all disappeared (perhaps due to a meteorite) long before humans evolved (which happened only about 1 million years ago).
