Hey Caroline, for me it’s finishing my PhD. It was so so hard. For a long time I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it! but luckily I persevered and managed and I’m so happy to be able to use Dr – i think I earned it with all that hard work 🙂

      Hi Caroline,

The thing that I am far and away most proud of is having three wonderful children. Beside them my achievements in science (which I *think* is what you are really asking about) seem not so significant.

I have done a few things that I am proud of but perhaps the one that gives me most satisfaction is the work I did to show how the poliovirus changes shape when it interacts with a cell and that this is an important part of the mechanism by which the virus gets inside the cell to start an infection.

I can see that it might not sound like much but, of all my achievements, this is the one that feels most like a ‘discovery’. My results are now written into textbooks on virus infection (virology) and that is very satisfying.

In science I think that would be helping to show that different parts of the brain are involved in finding your way about and following fixed routes. I got this published in a top neuroscience journal, and many other scientists refer to it, so I am quite proud of the work (it was very hard – I had to make a whole new “video game” for a start).

Outside science I am very please with the way my daughters are growing up to be happy, healthy, polite, imaginative and usually considerate. I take a tiny bit of credit for this (but my wife deserves most of it). Really this is a far more important achievement.

I am really proud of reaching the last two in I’m A Scientist and I’ve found it an incredibly rewarding experience from which I’ve learned a great deal. It’d be even better if I could win.
